In today's episode Chris Zeke Hand and Ryk E Coli Edelstein continue their visit to the very first Five Guys restaurant in Quebec, which is at the end of the earth, otherwise known as Vaudreuil.

The signs on the front door of Five Guys

The voices you will hear are those of Ross the manager, and then Caleb and Wayne the two partners in the franchise. Last week, in Episode 64 of the Montreal Burger Report Wayne and Caleb eloquently explained how they met playing ice hockey in Israel. In this episode, Ross, Caleb and Wayne all patiently explain to Zeke and E Coli how they will achieve nirvana, become euphoric and ecstatic upon eating a Five Guys burger. Apparently there are more than 5 trillion 230 billion different ways you can get your burger at Five Guys.

The conversation veers towards the French Fries and how they are made. Zeke and E Coli discover that the potatoes used to make the French Fries they will eat are from Rigby, Idaho and are made from Russet Burbank potatoes. The Russet Burbank potato is a large brown-skinned, white-fleshed cultivar of potato. It is commonly used in French fries in fast food restaurants. Luther Burbank developed the Burbank potato in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, in the early 1870s. In 1875 he sold the rights to his potato for $150, and moved to Santa Rosa, California. The Russet Burbank is the most common potato variety grown in Idaho. And there are close to 4,000 different varieties of potato. In general, varieties are categorized into a few main groups, such as russets, reds, whites, yellows (also called Yukons) and purples. And in case you were wondering, it is 3,663 km from Rigby Idaho to Vaudreuil. (From Wikipedia)

In today's episode Chris 'Zeke' Hand and Ryk 'E Coli' Edelstein drive to what seems the end of the earth, but is in fact Vaudreuil, so that they can visit and eat at the very first Five Guys restaurant in Quebec. Why Five Guys? Why Vaudreuil?

Five Guys in Vaudreuil

But before we get into the complete Five Guys experience, and answer questions like those, we need to back up slightly - actually a lot. Five Guys, in Quebec (and eastern Ontario) is run by Wayne Sellers and Caleb Koeppel. They met playing hockey, but not where you think. And then an introduction to Ryk 'E Coli' Edelstein is de rigueur. (If you are interested; e coli is a gram negative rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms. Most E. coli strains are harmless, they are part of the normal flora of the gut, and can benefit their hosts by producing vitamin K2, and by preventing the establishment of pathogenic bacteria within the intestine.)

E Coli

Here at the Montreal Burger Report we start with a checklist. A checklist of things to pay attention to, a checklist of things to concentrate on, and a checklist to focus us on the task at hand - eating hamburgers and cheeseburgers. In this episode we go over the items on the checklist.
